American Youth Football San Diego
football and futbol. Soccer?
I grew up in the US and Mexico. In Mexico we lived in Tijuana, Ensenada, and Tecate, and San Diego County in the US, so I was exposed to english and spanish alot but I had never heard the term “Soccer” until I joined a youth soccer team in the US. I grew up with everyone in my family(spanish) calling it futbol(football literaly) and I was aware europe called futbol, football or some other similar term. Then I got lost because Americans related football to another sport and “soccer” was used for futbol. Can anyone tell me why this is and if other countries use the term soccer? American football players dont do too much kicking so why is it called football? Im not hating, Im just not getting it. (im aware america has a real football/soccer team)
soccer is abbreviated that way because of association football. they took the “soc” out of it because the USA already has a football,(although you dont even use your feet at all.) and they added “er” to the end to make soccer”. sounds confusing but this is actually how the term came to be.
